Targeting the King | Beginner Checkmate Course
Why Beginners Don’t Know Where to Look for Checkmate
Checkmate doesn’t have to be complicated.
In this lesson, we introduce Targeting the King — one of the most effective ChessHeroes training methods for beginners learning how to recognize checkmates.
In this exercise, the opponent’s pieces are frozen.
They do not move or defend.
This removes distractions and allows the student to focus on one critical skill:
building a checkmating net around the enemy king.
In this lesson, students learn how to:
- focus attention on the enemy king
- identify and limit the king’s escape squares
- coordinate attacking pieces without distractions
- begin recognizing simple checkmate patterns
By removing defensive complexity, beginners learn to see the checkmate clearly and gain confidence much faster.
Targeting the King is part of the ChessHeroes training system, where progress is earned by solving chess challenges rather than passively watching lessons.
